Exploratory Sketches

Over the summer thus far, I have been preparing for my senior project. I've been writing a short children's story about an all animal circus that is run by the animals themselves.   I have been making a lot of progress. I have the story completed it just needs a little bit of revision.  I have been exploring character design and possibilities for these characters. I have a few animals left to do and i'll be posting them next week and I'll be refining some the exploratory sketches and come up with my character's final designs.  This project will be an animated story book using the toonboom puppet tool and after effects. I'm pretty excited and hope that it will get green lit.  Here's just a taste of some early concept work and there's much more work to come!

Flashback to the Past

I watched an old tv show the other day that I used to love when I was a kid. The show was called code lyoko. I loved the character designs, the story, and the animation. I just wish it would have been executed better though.  So, I drew up some fanarts of my favorite characters. I do not own these characters these are designed by Moonscoop and Antefilms a French animation company.

Ice cream puppy

I found this picture of a cake on tumblr the other day and so, I couldn't resist making a character out of him. Here's what I came up with.

Here are some sketches of some creature's I did last week. I got bored in the car during a lot of these when I traveled to upper Indiana for the weekend.

Drogue Species

I have to post some drawings that I've drawn last week.  I'll be doing that today. I apologize for the scanning quality. I unfortunately don't have my adobe production suite yet so, I've been drawing on paper still.  Here's a few of them.  These were just some exploratory sketches of my lizard character for an rpg game that my friends and I are playing. We get to choose our own race and then specialize them with powers and such.  Here's two designs of some possibilities I like. I plan on refining the character more later.

Monkeying around

I just spent a few minutes doodling some animals.  I started out with some gorillas and started making some gorilla, monkey, and bear creature designs.  I may return to that concept later, it could be fun. I wanted to try and work on sketching quickly and loosely. I always enjoy seeing artists that can draw fast, loosely, and accurate.  It helps you loosen up and understand anatomy and posing better. I'm going to try and do more of that over the summer.

Hello and Welcome!

Hello, and Welcome to my blog! I've never made a blog before so this is a first.  On this blog, I will be posting artwork, things that inspire me, and just about what I've been up to with my artistic journey.  My name is Catherine Esch. I am in college about to be a senior this august. I am pretty excited that I am almost done. I am studying animation at Huntington University.  I've always loved animated films.   I never thought I would get into it as a career but, I decided that there is nothing else I would rather do then something that I enjoy doing.  I am fairly decent at drawing. I enjoy drawing  more than I do shading and coloring.  I would say my strongest areas are drawing animals and creatures, life drawing, and animating.  I also enjoy sculpting.  I am a slow artist and I am striving not to be a perfectionist because, that is where I struggle.  I have finally gotten to a point where I have gained a lot of my confidence back and I am ready to start living and stop thinking about where I stand with the rest of the other artists. I would love to get more experience in 2d tradigital animation, z brush sculpting, traditional sculpting, and possibly even some 3d character animation. I hope to do a lot of personal work and personal animations after college to work on some things that I've wanted to work on.  Right now, I am on summer break and I am relaxing and working on some pre-production work for my senior project.  I am working on a children's circus story animation.  It deals with an all animal circus where the animals are running the show.  I will be posting stuff from my projects, and just little fun things I've been doodling soon.  Keep an eye out from my work and I thank you for visiting my blog, there will be much more to come.
